Hi everyone this is it, an infomative 1978 rugby league guide; in this guide i will be giving a brief description of the set and a guide line to what this set is potentialy worth (depending on factors)....
This set is 31 years old, and next year, the centenary of Rugby League, this set will truly be a veteran and increasingly rare (30 YEARS OLD!).
What makes this set so special is the fact that on the rear there are THREE picture puzzles - all scenes from the glorious 1977 grand final(s) between St Geeorge and Parramatta - the first drawn grand final. And as a Dragons fan who ultimately won the premiership that year - most magical!
LEGENDS:
This set includes some of the legends of the modern game.
Starting with the Dragons - (Lord) Ted Goodwin, (Rocket) Rod Reddy, Craig Young, Steve Edge, John Jansen ....
And the Eels - legend Mick Cronin, Ray Price, John Peard and North Queensland and NSW Origin coach Graham Murray
Other legends include ...
The Mortimer and Hughes brothers at Canterbury, Graham Eadie, Max Krilich, Terry Randall and modern media personality John Gibbs from Manly
The late Steve Rogers from Cronulla, Arthur Beetson, 2GB Continuous Call Vice Captain Bobby Fulton and Russell Fairfax playing for Easts
Tim Sheens playing for Penrih, recent coach of Canberra and Tigers.
The dangerous Les Boyd and famous Magpie Tom Raudonikis
Plus Souths legends George Piggins and Bob McCarthy
VALUE:
Now depending on the condition and refrences from past ebay auctions; this set is valued anywhere between $380 (set is considerd Fair-Good with a 5-6/10 rating) - $650(Set is considerd Excelent - Mint with a 8-9/10 rating)...
Note: The set is worth more with the checklists included
How do you rate your set or a potential set that you want to buy; you ask?? well the way i go about rating my sets are as followed: firstly i look at each individual card and look for the following (Creases, Scuff marks, Corner wear, Corner rounding, Dis-colouration, pen marks) once you have examined each card you need to put them in seperate categories:
Poor: Tears, signs of moths, multiple heavy creasing, or significant surface/rear damage due to staining, wear, moisture or tape
Fair: Worn, rounded corners, multiple small creases or single major crease.
Good: Single slight crease not extending across card, rounding of corners, slight wear.
Very Good: One or two slightly rounded corners, or small spot/area of wear. No creases allowed.
Ecellent: Features solid corners and edging. One minor imperfection allowed if does not detract from the card as a whole
Near Mint: Might have slight discolouration of the edges due to age or wear. Circulation is the only thing preventing mint grading
Mint: Generally uncirculated. Rare that anything pre 90's matches this because of the poor quality cardboard used from 1976 - 1989.
Now once you have catogrised your cards (E.g 50 cards = poor, 80 cards = Excellent, 26 cards = Near Mint) you need to grade them on a scale from 1-10
Here is the scale:
Poor: 0-2/10, Fair: 3-4.5/10, Good: 5-6/10, V.Good: 7/10, Excellent: 8/10, N.Mint: 9/10, Mint: 10/10... Once you have classified your cards on the scale all you need to do is a abit of simple maths:
Example: ill use the example above; i had 50 cards that were in poor condition so all i do is 50x3 = 150, 80 cards excellent 80x8 = 640, 26N.Mint 26x9 = 234, Add the sub totals 80+640+234 = 954 then divide the number by the amount of cards in the set 954/156 = 6.1, so this set is rated as Good:
Now people may or may not agree with my evaluations however this is why this is called a guide; Now if you found this helpfull then please click "yes" on the bottom of the page...
