Hi Folks,

Some of you have already read my other guide which generalizes about buying a Rolex watch. These watches are very often copied and it can be a minefield buying one.

Due to the nature of the many models/references it's advised to get an expert watch maker or Rolex dealer to check out the item as soon as possible.

Some real quick checks can be done though. These checks relate more to the GMT II,Explorer,Submariner,Seadweller and Yacht Master models and remember these are quick checks.

a) The Bubble over the date, called the cyclops should magnify the date 2.5 times. The date background should be white and on Two tone models off white/gold colouring.

b) There will be no markings on the case back (eg Daytona 24 hour). The only watch to have markings is the Seadweller. There are definitely no clear display backs, period.

c) The bracelet stampings should be very clear and precise with no over stamp marks etc.

d) It's nice to get the paper work and it certainly no means of proving authenticity but it can help. The date and print run on the the Warranty certificate will roughly correspond with the date of manufacture .This is a little code on the bottom of the your guarantee certificate.

e) If you visit most Rolex watch forums most will have a quick link to other sites telling tips and what to look for.One great tip is the serial number prefix letter which will indicate the year of manufacture.(Approx) The serial number will be prefixed by this letter and will look something like this D54xxxx.It means it is a 2004 model.(Approximately)

f) The serial number is located between the lugs and the bracelet needs to be removed. The model number is located on the other end of the watch case.

g) Once again the watch model numbers and serial prefixes can be found at most forums.

h) If in doubt speak to the seller and ask for a photo with a current newspaper date or a unique photo showing a time or date displayed on the watch nominated by yourself.

i) Look out for some watches as they may have been upgraded from a stainless steel model to a two tone steel and gold model. One quick check is the date wheel on genuine TT watches are off colour white(Cream to gold colour) ,where steel watches are white.

 j) If the watch doesn't have a green hologram on its case back it doesn't mean it is not genuine and vice versa. These stickers wear with age until they are just a green blob. Many collectors remove them.

h) The watch's minute hand will extend to the outer markers.(Most fakes fall well short of this.)

Remember Rolex watches are of a high quality and every thing will be of a high tolerance almost perfect.

Some terms to be wary of."It was a gift","found it in Grandpa's sock draw","an ex girlfriend gave it to me"

Above all, Be careful as the above is only a very small taste of what to look for. There are a few good books out there and experience does help.Good luck and remeber there are no bargains.
