Orchid and Bromeliad Potting Mixes for seedlings and larger plants
We have found bark and perlite to be the best as "In our area" we do not get much rain but when we do we get wet. We have found that outdoor plants or plants in shade houses are ether to dry or to wet, most mixes don't suit our area vermiculite holds way to much moisture and rots the base of the plants and bark by its self is to dry. It is best to use a washed bark (to remove the tenum and salt mostly) we use debco orchid bark mixes these are ready to go bar the perlite which we add.
Our mix is made up of approx 80-90% bark and 10-20% perlite (if ordering in larger bags you will need a size we use 400-500)
you may need to play with your own mix depending on rain fall.
one important note is that your plants will let you know when there dry giving you time to fix the problem but in most cases when to wet they rot and die nearly over night
SEEDLINGS
If using peat when it is wet its wet and when dry it is hard to get wet and hold water (peat is good for seed raising of brom's) we use some in our seedling mixes only here is some picturs of just peat note that seed is spaced out for less algae groth and nice size plant before potting
