Dating Pieces
It is quite easy to date Carlton Ware once you are familiar with the time period that certain back stamps were in production. It is important to know which back stamp were in use for certain patterns and years, as it is often found that when pieces are forged there is incorrect back stamps in place. For example, the piece below left bears a variation of the crowned W& R back stamp. Whilst this particular back stamp was registered, it was never actually put into production. Therefore, this item is more than likely a fake.
To the right is a picture of the correct stamp, note the difference in the shape of the crown.
Below is an approximate production timeline, indicating periods when the more popular back stamps were produced.
- W&R - Pre 1930
- Registered Australian design - Post 1935
- No hand painted pattern number - Post WWII
- Rouge Royale - Post WWII
- 'Hand painted' - Post 1950
