So, your Pulse Smartpen has arrived and you can't wait to get your hands
on it and start playing! Well to make it a little easier for you I've written
this guide to share my knowledge and the steps I took to get started.
Step 1: Check the contents of the box to make sure everything's there.
It should contain the following items:
- 1 x Pulse Smartpen (PC & MAC Compatible)
- 1 x 3D Recording Headset
- 1 x Neck strap
- 1 x USB mobile charging cradle
- 1 x Getting Started Guide
- 1 x Starter single-subject, college-ruled notebook
- 1 x Soft black case (For the Smartpen)
- 2 x Spare ink cartridges
- 1 x Stylus
- 1 x Interactive controls sticker sheet
- 1 x Demo card
Note: Don't connect your Smartpen to the charging
cradle before completing Step 2.
Step 2: Go to livescribe.com and download the Livescribe Desktop for your
MAC or Windows PC. Once the download has finished install the Livescribe
Desktop to your computer.
Note: The Pulse Smartpen is compatible 'only' with and MAC OS X (Intel,10.5).
Windows XP & Vista (32 Bit) and Windows Vista (64 Bit).
Step 3: When the installation has finished open Livescribe Desktop. Place
the Smartpen onto the charging cradle, the magnet will hold it securely in
place, then plug the USB cable into any available USB port on your computer.
Step 4: Once connected the battery will begin charging and your Smartpen
will connect to Livescribe.com. Follow the registration prompts and allow the
Smartpen to download the updates. When the updates finish leave your
Smartpen connected to the charging cradle so the battery fully charges.
This can take up to 2.5 hours...
Note: Don't forget to register your Smartpen online so you get the full 12
months warranty. It's free so don't miss this opportunity!
Step 5: While the battery is charging take a tour around livescribe.com, view
the info movies and download the relevant .pdf files for your operating system.
- Livescribe_Pulse_Specifications.pdf
- MacOSX Livescribe Desktop User Manual.pdf
- Windows Livescribe Desktop User Manual.pdf
- Windows Pulse User Manual.pdf
They are comprehensive documents and will give you a better understanding
of how your Smartpen works, and the technology inside this amazingly
useful work and study tool.
Step 6: When the pen is fully charged remove it from the cradle and refer to
the 'Getting Started Guide' that came with your Smartpen. Read the guide
thoroughly and use it to set the time, date and right or left hand orientation.
To familiarise yourself with Livescribe Dot Paper open the notebook that came
with your Smartpen and follow the examples and instructions on the first page.
The dot paper controls at the bottom of each page, and those on the inside
front and back covers, and the ultra fine micro-dot pattern covering each page
are what allow you to interact with the Smartpen.
Each page has a record, pause and stop control, these allow you to choose
what and when to record, pause and stop. The jump control allows you to
jump forward and backward in increments. The bookmark control allows you
to quickly locate information. The jump to position control allows you to move
to any position within your recordings. The playback speed control allows you
to control the audio playback speed. The volume control allows you to control
the playback volume.
To show the time on your Smartpen just tap the Time icon on the Status
control panel. Tap the Date icon to show the date. Tap the Battery icon to
see how much charge you have left. Tap the Memory icon to see how much
storage you have left.
The Settings control panel allows you to set the time and date, adjust right
and left hand orientation, display brightness, scroll speed, menu voice,
playback latency, audio quality and microphone sensitivity.
Step 7: Experiment with the note book controls and the different options to
become familiar with the feeling of using your Smartpen. Tap the "record"
button with your Smartpen then write a short sentence. At the same time say
what you're writing out loud to test the Smart Pen's recording functionality.
After a short time tap the "stop" button. Now tap the pen on the first word
in the sentence you've just written to listen to the audio playback.
You didn't miss a word ... right?
It linked everything you wrote to everything you heard.
It's the micro-dot patterns and the infrared camera that allow the Smartpen
to recognise where it is on the page so when you tap your written notes, the
Smartpen will play back the correct recording. Known as Dot Positioning
System (DPS), it works similar to Global Positioning System (GPS).
Well, that's it from me, I hope you found my guide helpful!
All the best.
