WHAT IS AN N64 EXPANSION PAK FOR AND WHY WOULD I NEED ONE?

The Expansion Pak is a memory expansion that plugs into the console's memory expansion port,
It is a system upgrade for the Nintendo 64 that doubles the console's RAM storage capacity to 8 MB.
The add-on was released in 1999 and contains 4 MB RDRAM, the same type of memory used inside the console itself.By increasing system memory, there is potential for enhancements to play games designed with the added RAM storage in mind.

The Expansion Pak is installed in a port that is below a removable panel on the top of the N64 console, and replaces the pre-installed Jumper Pak.

A few games, such as Donkey Kong 64, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, the single player mode of Perfect Dark, the multiplayer mode of Starcraft 64 required it for play

Some of the games which support the Expansion Pak are Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour, Gauntlet Legends, Hybrid Heaven, Resident Evil 2, Road Rash 64, Shadow Man, Star Wars: Episode I Racer, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, San Francisco Rush 2049, South Park, and The World Is Not Enough.

Supporting games usually offered higher video resolutions or higher textures and/or higher color depth. For example, the Nintendo 64 all-remade version of Quake 2 features higher color depth but not a higher resolution when using the Expansion Pak. It was used in Starcraft 64, to unlock levels from the popular Brood War add-on for the PC version of the game.
Some games will allow players to choose a "high-resolution" option, increasing the screen resolution from 320 by 240 pixels to as much as 640 by 480 pixels, creating crisp, high-definition graphics. The Expansion Pak utilizes Nintendo 64's capability for 32-bit, 16.7-million-color display with 256 levels of transparency, bringing your games to a new level of realism.
Instead of reusing texture data, games can buffer a larger number of textures for a more distinct look.
