This guide is an attempt to point out to the beginer, some of the pros and cons with setting up your own home based online / internet business.

After lots of searching and pulling what's left of my hair out, I came across affiliate marketing. This is a concept in which you become an affiliate or partner with another online business operator.

You sell or market goods or services provided by your affiliate and get a commission for your work.

Positives.

Now this is the good part -- If you do your homework, you can find deals where your commissions are up to 90% !! Not bad huh? Between 50% and 75% commissions are common place too. It depends on the popularity of the vendors goods and the calibre of affiliate marketer that they wish to attract.

Another good aspect of this type of business is that you have no office, shop, factory or other physical place of business. So you don't pay rent or mortgage repayments. Nor do you have any employees or the associated costs and headaches. No inventory or stock to worry about either as this is the responsibility of your affiliate or partner.  But in most cases, they are selling digital products anyway.

Together with these positive attributes, you also have no problems with being paid the right amount and on time. Affiliate's typicaly find each other at places like Clickbank. After setting up a free account there, each time you make a referral sale, your account is credited with your agreed amount of commission. Cheques are then sent to you every two weeks.  Top affiliate's can make six figure incomes for working at home in their pyjamas or their underwear.

Very low start up costs are another positive for online / internet based businesses. If you have a computer and an internet connection, you are already well on your way.

Negatives.

On the negative side, most of the online / internet opportunities out there are portrayed as get rich quick, or become a millionaire over night deals. Of course, this is very rarely, if ever possible. People seeking to get involved in this field more often than not start out believing that they can just press a button and the money starts rolling in. Again, this is almost never the case. 

To become really successful, affiliate marketing does require some effort, work, expertise and the right methods. A trustworthy partner or affiliate is also vital to your success. A little knowledge of HTML is also very helpful. You will also need to become familiar with search engine optimisation. To make affiliate sales, you need to bring potential customers to your web site. Lots of them! This is done by gaining a high ranking for your business web site on the popular search engines. This requires sound practices and time to establish and in most cases just can't happen overnight.
