We are having a problem getting our wii sports disc out of the console.  The machine makes a funny noise and does not release the disc

That is some serious problem! The answer to your question, whether I can help you with this or not, is yes and no. Yes as in, I can advise you what to do, no as in, I probably won't able to practically solve your problem.

This problem classifies as a hardware-problem, which falls under the warranty. Just in case you missed something, I will provide you with a short checklist on how to remove a disk. Now, don't think I consider you to be moronic, this is just to make sure you don't embarrass yourself when returning your Wii.

1: Check if there is really a disk inside of the console (stupid mistakes like this have been made)
2: Make sure you push the eject button (some mistake the resetbutton for it) located on the bottomleft on the front side of the machine.
3: A strange sound will be heard, which is right. The disk will come rolling out.

If this doesn't do the trick, try tapping the console on the sides a bit (gently), it could have drifted off from the eject-track. If this still doesn't fix your problem, the only thing you can probably do is open up your console. Now, this makes your warranty void, so it probably wise to refrain from doing this unless you know what you are doing. Take it back to the store instead, explain your story, and you will get a new Wii and Wii Sports copy.
