SHILL BIDDING – THE SCOURGE OF ALL AUCTIONS

Whether it be your local auction house, a motor vehicle auction or even a house we are all aware shill bidding, or as it is known in the trade “running the bid up” goes on.
How many times have you been at an auction when all of a sudden the auctioneer seems to take a bid from a tree, a post or even one of his own workers?

Well internet auction sites are no different unscrupulous sellers who try to avoid the increased listing fees by listing their items at auction for a low starting price then running the bid up is apparent, or they see someone is showing a lot of interest in their item and decide to push the price up.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

Study the bid history, see if one particular bidder is bidding small increments straight after a bid has been placed it may take them a few bids each time to push the price up.
They will more often than not have a low or zero feedback score (this doesn’t mean all zero feedback bidders are shill bidding)
Look at the bidders bid history, have they bid on other items frantically or is this the only item they have bid on.
Often these sellers are only casual sellers one item here and there; it is very rare that regular sellers would lower themselves to this practice.
If you suspect you have been a victim of this practice or that is going on in an auction you are watching…. Report it to eBay immediately, they will look into it and have severe penalties for this type of behavior
